Bringing Yoga and Mindfulness to Secondary Schools

Yoga in Public Schools: A Nationwide Grassroots Movement

Allison Rosemond is an inspiring Middle School Counselor in South Carolina. Previously, Allison has shared about the ways she incorporates wellness activities into her daily interactions with students and how she addresses barriers. Because of the power of mindfulness, Allison continues to find innovative ways to utilize Yoga 4 Classrooms to make yoga and mindfulness accessible to all of her students. Let’s catch up with Allison and hear more about how she is working to ensure students AND staff have access to mindfulness.

At Greer Middle School, we have continued to thoughtfully integrate mindfulness into our daily and weekly routines to support both student and staff well-being. By embedding mindful practices into morning announcements, weekly tips, and dedicated moments for staff, we have created consistent opportunities for everyone in our school community to pause, reflect, and reset.

Each morning, our announcements include a Brief Mindfulness Practice. This might be a 30-second “Let’s Breathe” breathing activity, a short “Imagination Vacation” guided visualization, or a grounding prompt like “name one thing you can hear, see, and feel.” These simple and accessible strategies, which always begin and end with a ring from a focus chime, help students start their day with intention, reduce anxiety, and increase focus. Over time, these practices build habits that students can rely on throughout their day, especially during times of stress or transition.

In addition, we share a Wellness Tip of the Week designed specifically for middle school students. These tips are short, practical, and immediately usable—ranging from how to create a calming corner at home, to ways to handle test anxiety or practice gratitude. Tips are posted on our weekly digital slides so students can refer back to them for reflection and peer conversation.

For staff, we created a Midweek Mindful Moment—a short Wednesday email that offers a mindful check-in or self-care strategy. These might include guided breathing recordings, journal prompts, or reminders to take a few minutes to walk, stretch, or disconnect from screens. The goal is not to add more to anyone’s plate, but to create small windows of restoration and connection during a busy week. Many staff members have expressed appreciation for these simple nudges, which help them center themselves and remain present for their students.

Together, these mindfulness integrations create a school-wide culture that values mental well-being, emotional awareness, and intentionality—supporting both students and staff in showing up as their best selves each day.

We love to hear about the innovative ways Yoga 4 Classrooms is used in schools. Thank you, Allison, for the many ways you make a difference for your students! We would love to hear how you are using Yoga 4 Classrooms at your school, too. Contact us and share your story.
