An easy way to celebrate progress, practice gratitude, and build confidence.
As educators, we are often focused on what’s next. The next lesson, the next challenge, the next student who needs support. But how often do we pause to recognize what we have already accomplished?
A recent TIME article, Why You Should Start a Brag Folder, introduces a simple idea: Keep a collection of your accomplishments, positive feedback, and moments you are proud of. It is not about bragging to others. It is about reminding ourselves of our growth, especially on the days when things feel difficult.
At Yoga 4 Classrooms, we love this idea because it connects so naturally with mindfulness, gratitude, and self-compassion!
For Educators: Create Your Own Brag Folder
Teaching can be incredibly rewarding, but it is easy to let one challenging moment overshadow all the good happening throughout the day. Start a digital or physical folder where you save:
- Kind notes from students, families, or colleagues
- Positive feedback and meaningful accomplishments
- Photos or reminders of successful classroom moments
- Small wins, like connecting with a student or trying something new
Mindful Moment: At the end of each week, take two minutes to reflect on something that went well. Add it to your folder, and revisit your collection whenever you need encouragement.
Remember, progress doesn’t always look like a major achievement. Sometimes, simply showing up with patience and compassion is worth celebrating.
For Students: Celebrate the Small Wins
This practice can be just as meaningful for students!
Invite students to create their own “Proud Moments” folder or journal where they can collect evidence of their growth throughout the school year. Encourage them to include:
- Something they worked hard to accomplish
- A challenge they overcame or a mistake they learned from
- A kind act they shared with someone
- A new skill they are practicing
- A moment when they demonstrated courage or perseverance
You can even make this a weekly classroom routine!
Friday Reflection: Begin with three comfortable breaths, then invite students to finish the sentence: “This week, I’m proud of myself for…”
Students can write, draw, or privately reflect on their responses. Encourage them to celebrate effort, growth, and kindness, not just grades or awards.
A Little Reflection Goes a Long Way
Mindfulness is not just about noticing difficult emotions. It is also about recognizing the positive moments we might otherwise overlook.
When we intentionally acknowledge our progress, we create opportunities to practice gratitude, build self-awareness, and develop a more balanced perspective on ourselves. At Yoga 4 Classrooms, we believe these small moments of reflection deserve a place in every school day.
So here’s your challenge: Start a brag folder for yourself, introduce the idea to your students, and make celebrating small wins part of your classroom culture!
Because sometimes, the most meaningful progress is the progress we almost forget to notice. One mindful moment at a time!
